OUR LAMB

Tawanda Farms raises the Romney breed of sheep.  This is a “dual purpose” sheep – they provide a very mild, succulent meat as well as a beautifully crimped fleece much sought after by hand spinners.  We raise both white and natural color Romneys.

These sheep give birth to mostly twin lambs.  We lamb in January and February.  This timing allows the lambs to be on nice, new grass in the spring.

Our sheep receive yearly vaccinations but no maintenance antibiotics.  They consume self-selected pasture grasses from April through November, our own stored grass hay and alfalfa from December through March. In December and January we supplement the ewes late pregnancy needs with apples from a nearby orchard.  They do love these sweet little fallings!  Lambs are able to convert grass to animal weight at the rate of ½ pound per day.

Our Romney lamb is tender and mild.  If you have enjoyed “New Zealand” lamb, you have enjoyed Romney lamb, as 80% of NZ lamb is Romney.  The difference is that ours is exclusively “grass fed”.
